Frequently Asked Questions
Things we get asked a lot
No, except for one night each year (Cracker Night), fireworks are not available to the general public. You can only purchase and use fireworks on Cracker Night if you have a valid permit from WorkSafe Tasmania. Outside of Cracker Night, only licensed pyrotechnicians may use fireworks for approved displays
Cracker Night is celebrated on 24 May each year—if that date isn't a Saturday, it is held on the next Saturday. Anyone 18 years or older can apply for a Cracker Night fireworks permit, but you must use the fireworks only at the location stated on your permit, and only during the designated time slot.
Fireworks permit applications for Cracker Night must be submitted through Service Tasmania outlets. Applications are generally open in early March, and the deadline is typically the first Friday in May. Displays must follow strict location and safety rules. For all other displays (not on Cracker Night), only licensed pyrotechnicians like Spark Fireworks can apply for a display permit.
Yes. Fireworks must only be set off on private property with the landowner’s permission, never in public areas. There are strict requirements regarding minimum distances from spectators, protected works, and sensitive areas due to the risk to people, property, and wildlife.
Yes! Professional displays can be booked for community events, festivals, corporate gatherings, and more. Spark Fireworks’ licensed pyrotechnicians handle all permits, safety requirements, and the show itself. Contact Spark Fireworks for more information or to discuss your event
Currently, weddings are not classified as an approved purpose for private fireworks displays in Tasmania. This means that, under existing rules, you cannot obtain a permit to have fireworks at a wedding unless it is part of a larger public event or falls under another approved category. However, there are active conversations between event providers and the Tasmanian government about changing the regulations to make weddings an approved purpose in the future. We encourage you to check back with Spark Fireworks or keep an eye on updates from WorkSafe Tasmania for the latest developments on this topic.
The cost of a professional fireworks display in Tasmania can vary significantly depending on factors like the duration and scale of the show, location, permit fees, special effects, and custom designs. A small local event may start from a few thousand dollars, while larger or more complex displays (such as at major festivals or corporate events) can cost considerably more. Spark Fireworks provides tailored quotes based on your needs, ensuring all safety, permit, and regulatory requirements are met. Contact us to discuss your event and receive a detailed price estimate
WorkSafe Tasmania requires that all fireworks permit applications be submitted at least 21 clear days prior to the event. To meet this requirement, we will need additional time beforehand to compile all the necessary information and documentation.
This can include:
Permissions from nearby schools, churches, or aged care facilities
Landowner consents if the display is on private property
Crown land approvals, which can take up to 8 weeks
For this reason, we recommend booking as early as possible to allow us to complete all steps and secure the required approvals in time
